CHARACTER
Name: Kiyotaka Ishimaru
Canon: Dangan Ronpa
Timeline: Right after the first homicide.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A
Personality: (This section contains spoilers about what happens to various characters in the series, tread with caution!)
Ishimaru Kiyotaka is not a person who could ever be called sociable. He is, in fact, the opposite of it. He exists around the very thing that titles him, that being his life as a Super High School Level Hall Monitor. Ever since he has lived, he has had a perfect, spotless record. Not a single B, not any traces of detention. In addition to that, he also participated in his school’s disciplinary committee. This helped cement the person he has become, a being focused only on limits, restrictions, and pushing oneself to their limit, spreading this and many other mottoes to whoever may be listening, which is usually no one, along with an odd fascination in naming out the obvious. This may make him seem like a fairly two dimensional character, but the depth there is to it reveals to us an entirely new side of the character. It is revealed to the reader that, even since grade school, the only thing on his mind was studying. Whenever he tried to initiate a conversation, it usually would not last for very long, and it is soon after revealed that, at the time of the story’s event, Ishimaru did not know what a hobby was, such as TV or comics. He is fascinated to hear about these odd new things, taking into conclusion the fact that because he did not “study” TV or comics enough, he could not hold a conversation for a minimal amount of time. In his mind, everything is based around the one pillar which is Studying, Rigor, and Discipline, which is why, more often than not, he strikes people around him as an odd individual, usually found going on about discipline, or perhaps the lack of it. That does not mean, however, that he is what is commonly called a sour puss. He always cheers everyone on to make the most of their day and try their best, and to move forward regardless of the circumstance, which follows his endless list of mottoes regarding taking things to the limit and to do all you can before the day is over.
In addition, he is exactly the contrary of emotionless, as in the series, he often gets emotional about various things. be it his very own conviction and view on life, someone else’s good deed or perhaps the murder of a friend, or even worse, someone he viewed as a brother committing murder. He often tears up for this very reason, and in more extreme cases, he cries like a gross baby. Snot, drool, tears, you name it. This goes into how fervently he believes in everything, and how with his character, there is no such thing as a half measure. Once his mind is set on something, he will either accomplish it, or die trying. During the series, he gets into an argument with Mondo Oowada, calling the other man out on lacking willpower, and that being why he usually resorted to violence. This escalated into them challenging each other into an endurance test, to see who really lacked willpower, in the sauna. The results of this duel were inconclusive, but it is implied that both of them were inside the sauna for hours. The very next morning, he and Mondo were calling each other “aniki” (“Big brother” In Japanese slang), patting each other on the shoulder/back constantly and praising each other endlessly, which resulted in a rather awkward breakfast for anyone involved. From this, we can gather that Ishimaru will go to any lenghts to prove his ultimate conviction on everything, which later backfires when Mondo Oowada betrays and murders Chihiro Fujisaki. The trial for his death was a hard one for Ishimaru to cope with, as when it was pretty much concluded that Mondo Oowada was the culprit, he denied it with every fibre of his being, but the conclusion was inevitable, and he had to witness his “aniki’s” execution first hand, and a rather shocking one at that. After these events, he becomes broken, his trust ripped apart, and his infallible belief in his deceased “big brother” shattered to pieces. After this, he does not speak another word, and doesn’t even sleep. The only time he does speak, however, is when the antagonist hints at the existence of a time machine, and it’s at this mention that Ishimaru perks up, and asks him to be able to use it to go back in time to stop Oowada from committing murder. The antagonist laughs at him and actually reveals the machine is just an air purifying machine, and that time travel is not possible and never will be, leaving him in an even worse state. The next time he acts toward something is when his deceased friend, Oowada, shows up in a laptop’s computer AI system, and from that moment on Ishimaru suffers a sudden transformation, his hair turning white and his personality becoming more twisted, swearing oftenly, something the old Ishimaru would never do while he breathed. In conclusion, Ishimaru is the personification of Discipline, taking the entire concept to entirely new lengths. His entire character revolves around taking everything to the limit, and beyond. He does not take anything lightly, there is no such thing as leaving something for later/unfinished for this teenager. Everything and everyone must be in order, no matter the cost.
First Person: Sample here.
Third Person: Really, it would be an ordinary day for anyone else. With temperatures below freezing, most people would enjoy staying home, covered in blankets and attempting to remain heated. But not this guy. Anyone looking out the window would have spotted a rather feisty teenager, jogging around the city at something AM, too early for anyone to really tell, in a t-shirt and shorts, whilst spouting out rounds upon rounds upon rounds of motivational shouts.
“No weather is too harsh for anyone who puts their heart and soul into it!”
Really, likely to be the cheesiest stuff anyone had ever heard in their entire lives. Even counting children’s shows. Yes, it was THAT bad. Anyone walking by would have been greeted with a very hearty “Good morning!”, followed by a “Have an excellent day!”, regardless of who they were. Yes, Ruby City, this was likely to become your new alarm clock, for Kiyotaka Ishimaru is never too early, or never too late. At 6:30 AM, every day, down to the second, he leaves his house without fail, and runs a pre-determined path around the city, making everyone listen to his often tiring and loud pep talk.
“A healthy body and a healthy mind are a home for a healthy soul!” he shouted once more. It was quite hard to tell if he was talking to himself or just playing the part of an ambulant siren, but whatever it was, it was a mix between endearing and so very annoying.
